Frederick is located along the Civil War Trail in Maryland,
between the Gettysburg
and Antietam
National Battlefields. As a result, several attractions found in this area
boast a Civil War theme. The National
Museum of Civil War Medicine depicts military medical history through a variety
of exhibits, artifacts and manuscripts. The Monocacy
National Battlefield is a popular historic site, as it witnessed the 1864
battle that turned out to be the Confederates' last attempt to move the war towards
Washington, D.C.
Today the site features hiking trails, a visitor center and a variety of historical
programs that are held throughout the year. Outdoor adventure is found just north
of Frederick at Gambrill
State Park, where camping, fishing and picnicking are popular pastimes. Every
September the city is abuzz during the nine-day Great
Frederick Fair, which features commercial exhibits, agricultural events, a
demolition derby and live performances by renowned music groups.
